Technically, winter does not start until December 21st… but if you are located in Missouri, like us, you know we have already had some chilly days and only have more approaching! The same goes for a lot of the country, who are preparing themselves for a colder season ahead! (Plus, let’s face it electricity can be pricey, so why not try to save a little money!)

That is why, we think we need to give you all our tips and tricks, on how to prepare your home for the cold and warm the space up!

  1. Add a Rug/Installing Carpeting

Waking up in the winter is hard enough, but forcing yourself to put your feet on cold hardwood… nearly impossible! Sure, you could get some slippers, but adding a rug will provide an extra layer of warmth on a larger surfacer and insulate the hardwood floors a bit! So grab a beautiful rug, and wear your slippers if you want!

If you have been considering installing carpeting, now would be the perfect time! Really add an extra layer and protect your feet from the bitter cold floors! We offer a variety of design options in carpet flooring, plus we have water-resistant, pet and kid-friendly options, with lots of great deals and professional installation!

  1. Seal Up all Windows and Add Some Curtains

Start by making sure your windows are completely shut, and locked. It is important to check the top and bottom windows, to make sure these is no cool air leaking in. If you want to go a step further, considering caulking the windows and doors, or tape a plastic barrier to really stop any small draft!

Don’t want to show off your covered up windows? Take the extra step and add some thick curtains! This can also help on its own! Again, blocking extra air coming in, and insulating the area again the bitter cold outside. (Plus, you could get them in a warm shade, a little foreshadowing on an upcoming tip!)

  1. Furniture with a Soft and Fuzzy Upholstery

If you are looking for new furniture why go with something stylish, trendy and warm! We carry sectionals, sofas, and recliners in a variety of textures that look and feel great! Soft and cozy textures in the winter will feel warmer to the touch than leather furniture. (Nothing against leather!! We are just keeping warmth in mind here!

  1. Reverse the Ceiling Fan

We have all heard that warm air rises, correct? If not, no problem, we are hear to tell you that warm air does indeed rise! This means simply reversing your ceiling fan will then help circulate that warm air back around in your room. (Pro Tip: As someone who just reversed my fan, make sure you clean it first. Dust can collect on ceiling fans and reversing it can send it flying around the room!)

  1. Add More Pillows and Blankets, Everywhere

Okay, so maybe not everywhere, a blanket and pillow in the bathroom may not work well. But adding some extra throw blankets in your living and sleeping spaces can be such a help. Then you can just layer on the blankets, if you start to get chilly! Same goes for the pillows, just adding more layers, making you feel even cozier!

  1. Get the Right Prep Supplies

Some essential supplies are beyond furniture for the winter season. For example, a small space heater can really help! It can warm smaller spaces and help keep pipes warm if temperatures are below freezing.

Outside supplies can also be essential for this time. A snow shovel to remove snow from the walkway and driveways. In addition, salt to melt ice, it’s not a bad idea to stock up now, since these things go quick during the first snowstorm of the year! Don’t forget the ice scraper for your car and gloves to make it bearable!

  1. Add More Warm Colors to Your Space

The foreshadowing is over! We know changing or adding colors to a room will not actually warm up the room, but the warm colors can create an inviting and welcoming environment. The winter months are also the darker months, so adding some light colors can help brighten up the space and mood!

  1. Extra Lighting!

Are you prepared for it to get dark at 6 PM? Us either, but adding some lighting you LOVE on the inside can really help. An extra table lamp for a subtle touch, or a flashy statement floor lamp to add light and stylish flare!

  1. Seasonal Decor/Festive Candles

Again, these may not physically raise the heat, but they sure too stir up a warm feeling inside! Get in the holiday spirit and add some decor that warms your soul. The flicker of the candle flame probably does not put off enough heat to really help, but again doesn’t that delicious smell warm your soul? The joy and happiness is worth the different type of warmth.

  1. Get a Console Fireplace

This one is a tad obvious, get an electric fireplace to warm the space and your soul! Curl up next to the fire with a good book and delicious hot cocoa. Talk about a Winter Wonderland! Plus some consoles have extra storage and multifunctions!

All in all, we cannot stop the cold from coming. BUT we can implement several different types changes that allow us to keep warm from the inside, to the outside! Consider using these tricks this winter and let us know what worked best for you!
