Did you know a quality mattress should last you 7-10 years and maybe even a little longer? It all depends on the quality of care you provide. The good news is that taking care of your mattress is pretty simple and once you know, you’ll never go back.

There are a few key factors to remember when caring for your mattress. Those include cleaning, protection, and wear.

Cleaning

When you’re doing your weekly or monthly cleaning it’s time to add your mattress to the list of to-dos. Whenever you’re washing your bedding is the perfect time to vacuum your mattress. This will remove dust, allergens, and debris that get stuck during the night.

If you notice that your mattress has stains, try spot-cleaning it with a diluted solution of gentle laundry detergent or dish soap and warm water. Stains can develop from regular use due to sweat and other body fluids.

You can always opt to have your mattress professionally cleaned. Having your mattress thoroughly cleaned can help reduce wear and tear between the cover and linings, which will ultimately help it last longer. Not everybody thinks to clean their mattress but in order to preserve the quality and longevity, cleaning is a necessity.

Protection

There are thousands of different kinds of mattress protectors. Some are waterproof, some are bugproof and some can cool you down. It shouldn’t come down to do you need a mattress protector, it should come down to which kind you need.

If you are someone who doesn’t have time or doesn’t get around to doing the extra cleaning, a mattress protector will also protect against spills, stains, and dust mites from getting into your mattress, prolonging its lifespan. For hybrid and memory foam mattresses, a mattress protector will prevent moisture from entering and molding or damaging your mattress.

Wear

Hopefully, if you have a mattress you’re using it. If that’s the case then your mattress is going to experience normal wear and tear from daily use. In order to protect the wear of your mattress you should rotate it frequently. This helps spread out wear and tear evenly across the surface. You should also flip or rotate your mattress if it's sagging or lumpy. Those are signs that indicate it's lost support and needs to be repositioned.

When you are cleaning your mattress you should also let it air out without anything on it. Open a window or add a fan for a few hours to help keep it in good condition.
